Robert Reich i Berkeley univ. (var ju arbetsmarknadsminister i en Bill Clinton-ministär): “Democrats have an almost reflexive need to compromise; Republicans a steadfast urge not to. That doesn't bode well. I was on the "Ed Show" last night discussing John Boehner's decision to name Paul Ryan as chief "negotiator" with the Democrats over taxes. Also on with me was Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan (no relation), who's on the House Budget Committee. Tim Ryan illustrated my worst fears. He kept talking about the importance of reaching a compromise with Republicans before January, when the Bush tax cuts expire. But Democrats have to remember they won the election. If Republicans won't significantly raise taxes on the rich, Democrats have to have the fortitude to say no deal.”
